Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker 7.4-Quart Review

I really like my Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker. I have used it twice, I did a 2 3/4 lb chuck roast with carrots and potatoes and it took approx 1 1/2 hours start to finish. That included releasing pressure to add the vegetables and repressuring and cooking for an additional 10 minutes. I then made a gravy with the left over juices in the same pot on the stove. Everything was tender and juicy, and the vegetables retained their color and flavor.

The pressure cooker is a big time saver. I have had some trouble with the pressure stem indicator popping up to show the red lines when it comes up to pressure. I had to tap on the top of the indicator both times and then it started to come up and the pot was pressurized. I will try to tighten the valve stem screw as a few other reviewers have recommended.

I like the pressure indicator stem with the red lines, as it lets you easily see if you are keeping the pressure high enough throughout the cooking, and it also makes a hissing sound if the pressure has become too high. This happened and I turned on my other large electric burner at a lower setting and moved the pot over. The pressure came down fairly quick and the hissing sound stopped. As you cook you may need less heat to maintain the pressure, I ended up switching burners twice as I kept reducing the heat to maintain a constant pressure.

The pressure cooker is really not that difficult to use, you just need to stay in the same room so you can monitor the red lines and listen for any steam release, indicating the pressure is too high. I would recommend this pressure cooker, it was not difficult to learn to use, and the cooking speed and taste of the food are wonderful.

If cooking with a pressure cooker sounds old-fashioned, think again. Great strides have enhanced the Duromatic since its inception in 1949. Swiss company Kuhn Rikon has made the pressure cooker quieter, safer, and a smart option in today's world, given how quickly it cooks and how much energy it saves. Pressure cookers are rapidly gaining in popularity, and this one is an exceptional model crafted in Switzerland. You'll find such foods as rice, grains, stews, poultry, and vegetables cook in just one-third the time of conventional methods, and retain vital nutrients. Choose from a variety of sizes to meet any household's needs. By saving 70 percent of the gas or electricity normally used in conventional cooking, the pressure cooker can pay for itself in just months.

The Duromatic is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel that encapsulates a solid aluminum core in the base for quick, even heating. Put in your ingredients (recipes are included), and the integrated lid automatically locks and won't open under pressure. A new generation spring-loaded valve uses red lines to show you at a glance whether the right pressure has been reached, and when cooking is done, you simply turn the knob for quick or slow release. Unlike old models, the Duromatic cooks quietly, without hissing, and five safety releases let you rest assured the pressure won't get too great. Kuhn Rikon covers the dishwasher-safe Duromatic with a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship, and guarantees parts will be available for 15 years. --Ann Bieri

New Pressure Cooker - Christine Tierney - Houston
I have used a pressure cooker for years to prepare stews and soups. When the gasket on my old pressure cooker failed and couldn't be replaced, I thought long and hard about buying a new one. I did the research and decided to splurge. I am thrilled with this purchase. I was a bit nervous the first time I used since since it did not make the distinctive hiss of my old one, but the stew I made was proof that a pressure cooker doesn't have to be so noisy. I'm seriously considering buying a smaller version.

Tried and true appliance - Sue -
I've had and used this for many years and continue the love. I'm not a particularly dedicated cook, but have made many great dishes in this. The gauge makes cooking very accurate. There is no intimidation factor in using a modern pressure cooker.
