Entry from: Iquitos, Peru Entry Title: "Motorcycle madness and mosquitos" Entry: "There are fans in the internet place where I´m sitting, but they only seem to be circulating hot air and I´m still sweating to death. I´m in Iquitos, a city in the far north-east of the country, in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. It´s the largest city in the world that can´t be reached by road. In fact the only road out of town goes to a smaller town called Nauta, and you can´t get anywhere else from there by road either. If you want to come to Iquitos, you have to take a riverboat for several days, or fly, as I did. I first arrived here a little over a week ago, and it felt like an adventure from the minute the plane landed. This place is unlike any other city I´ve visited so far. The first thing that hits you is that it is HOT. Think Darwin in the build-up but much worse. The other thing you notice is the noise. Instead of cars, almost everyone rides motorcycles or takes motocarros (tuk-tuks). I´m guessing it´s easier to ship bikes than cars and buses, although there are a few of both. The streets are teeming with motorbikes, and my guide tells me there are about 50000 motocarros in Iquitos (population 400000). You can imagine the noise all those little engines make! Entry from: Rimini, Italy Entry Title: "Rimini" Entry: "A short train trip from Verona and I'm in Rimini on the Adriatic coast. My cousin Gianluca and his girlfriend Manuela have lived here for around 5 years (both come from Matera down south, which I visited in May). Since I last saw them unfortunately Manuela´s father has died. He had had cancer for some time but seemed to be getting a bit better when I visited them, but regressed again soon after. Manuela´s mother is also visiting when I arrive and we spend an afternoon looking through the old quarter of town. Rimini comprises the old town (which was founded around 300BC) and surrounding new town, and a coastal resort comprising kilometres of lidos, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, etc. A lot of conferences, exhibitions, conventions, etc are held there and there is a university so many young people come here to study and work. It´s most famous son (at least to modern people) is Federico Fellini, and the area where he was born and raised has naive-type pictures painted on the outside walls of many houses. I use my time in Rimini to rest and recuperate - Gianluca and Manuela give me their bedroom to use (I protest but it is useless) and I have unlimited access to the internet (what bliss after internet cafes and all their limitations and cost), so I ...

However, two-thirds of Haitian rice is imported, exposing poor residents to fluctuations in the international market. In 2008, the world food crisis pushed up the local price of grain by two to three times. In an effort to make Haitian farmers self-sufficient, the Taiwanese government has been offering technical support since 1972, without much success. In contrast, in the neighboring country of the Dominican Republic, where Taiwan runs a similar program, rice yield is double that of Haiti. To find out why there is such a difference between the two nations, which share the island of Hispaniola, we spoke to the members of Taiwan's agricultural teams working in both countries. Food For The Poor rice kitchen In the kitchen, a cook turns over a pot of rice. Enough food is being made inside for an army. Outside a full line of people are already waiting for lunch, even though it is only 10 o'clock. 13-year-old Crisla has been setting out from home at 7 o'clock in the morning every day for a year to queue up for food.
